Sarcoidosis is a chronic systemic granulomatous disease of unknown etiology, most commonly affecting young adults. Hutchinson described the dermatological presentation of sarcoidosis in 1875. Boeck, for whom the disorder was later named, reported the histology of these lesions in 1899. Because the skin lesions resembled sarcoma but had benign histopathologic and clinical features, Boeck named the lesions “sarkoid.” Since then, several scientists have contributed to the current understanding of sarcoidosis as a systemic disease with protean clinical manifestations. The clinical course of sarcoidosis ranges from spontaneous resolution to chronic progressive disease.
